Taking the Soviet sports science literature into the 21st-century

We are pleased to see the increased interest in the Russian (Soviet) literature . There is excellent information in the books and articles that is applicable for the training being done today, and most of the information is related to the theoretical aspects of training.

The practical aspects, although good, are, however, somewhat outdated. Understand that most of the information was first presented back in the 1970s-80s. There has been much progress since then, not only in the creation of new and different exercises, but also in terms of execution.

To learn about the many practical advances in this area we recommend that you read Dr. Yessis’ Biomechanics and Kinesiology of Exercise . For new exercises specific to sports, see the explosive series of books: Explosive Running, Explosive Basketball Training, Explosive Golf, and Explosive Tennis. These books go beyond the theoretical and provide practical implementation, which is the ultimate connection to the Russian theory.

The exercises are related to specificity, that is, exercises that duplicate sports technique and muscular involvement. These exercises are known as specialized strength exercises. They provide the athlete with the greatest improvement in his sports performance, as evidenced by results on the field.

Many of the exercises used by the Russians and Eastern bloc countries in the 70’s and 80’s used antiquated equipment, which were good at that time, but not for today’s athlete. . Dr Yessis has updated and modernized not only the sport-specific exercises, but also their training programs.
