Even though all football players need some of the same skills, high level mastery of specific skills is more important in certain positions. For example, all players must be able to run, but running backs, receivers, tight ends, and all backfield defensive players must be able to exhibit excellent running – and cutting – actions. To be more specific, all backfield players and quarterbacks must be able to exhibit:
Lineman on the other hand need the ability to react quickly, have a quick first and second step, accelerate for 5 to 10 yards and be explosive in their movements.
The greater the development and mastery of the above skills the better you will be able to execute the tactics and strategy required. This is when you will be a great player.
