Even though all football players need some of the same skills, high level mastery of specific skills is more important in certain positions. For example, all players must be able to run, but running backs, receivers, tight ends, and all backfield defensive players must be able to exhibit excellent running – and cutting – actions. To be more specific, all backfield players and quarterbacks must be able to exhibit:
  • Great speed
  • Quick and explosive sharp cutting actions
  • Effective running form (technique)
  • Effective cutting actions
  • Fast acceleration for 5 to 20 yards
  • Quick stopping and starting actions
  • The ability to leap quickly and for maximum height
  • Optimal development of the physical qualities specific to each skill
  • Energy to play as well near the end of the game as at the beginning of the game.
Lineman on the other hand need the ability to react quickly, have a quick first and second step, accelerate for 5 to 10 yards and be explosive in their movements. The greater the development and mastery of the above skills the better you will be able to execute the tactics and strategy required. This is when you will be a great player.
