Are Football Players Mediocre?

There have been several articles lately stating at the San Diego Chargers football players are mediocre as well as the ownership, GM, head coach and his assistants. There’s no doubt that there’s some validity to this statement. But it should not be shared equally.

The GM, ownership and coaches can be held accountable for the poor play of the players. But their accountability is not limited to the selection of players in the draft or in a trade. It relates to their lack of knowledge and understanding of what it takes to produce a high-level athlete.

They have selected some good players who simply need fine-tuning. They need improvement in their ability to execute the skills needed of them in gameplay in order to carry out the strategies developed and pushed by the coaches. Keep in mind that any strategy is only as good as the players’ ability to execute his skills.

This is a new concept in football and other sports in the US but it is an old concept when one takes a look at the science of training an athlete, especially as researched and developed by the Russians. This system of training is the basis for almost all successful training programs throughout the world. But it is practically unknown in the US.

By fine-tuning the players — who for the most part already have their physical abilities well developed thanks to the strength coaches — they will be able to perform on a much higher level. Until then, the team will continue to suffer and in many cases, continually get more injuries.

Thus, rather than criticizing players, coaches and owners, it’s about time that writers as well as the teams, looked to what they can do to improve player performance, i.e., the ability to execute their skills more effectively. Instead of doing the same old thing and getting the same old results it’s about time they looked to sports science for a few answers. The information is available, it only needs implementation.
