I keep reading about a new golf swing or swing of the future in various golf forums and even in advertisements for some golf schools. However, is there or can there be a new golf swing? I will never say a new swing is not possible, but all the new swings that have been extolled over the last 40 to 50 years are basically the same swing but with different wording.
In essence, the best golf swing that is possible involves several key actions that everyone must perform. If you have good coordination these actions are executed in a specific sequence, with the muscles contracting with the right amount of intensity and at the right time to produce the best results.
You may argue this does not explain why there are so made differences between golfers in regard to their swings, but if you closely analyze each of the swings you’ll see that there is no contradiction. The differences lie in how each of these actions is executed in regard to the range of motion, intensity of the muscle contractions and if certain actions are emphasized over others.
To have a successful golf swing every golfer must execute the key actions in the most effective manner possible. This in turn is determined by the golfer’s physical abilities. In essence, your swing is only as good as your physical and technical abilities allow. This is where we should be looking to determine the best swing.
But yet the technical and physical abilities are usually overlooked as pros usually dwell on experimentation with technique changes until a good hit is exhibited. Few if any look at the physical abilities of the golfer to see if he or she is capable of executing the actions suggested in order to display a great swing.
But when physical deficiencies are improved, a great golf swing is then possible from the technical side. But working on technique without first improving the physical abilities of the golfer, is usually a waste of time and money. When the golfer is capable of executing the actions that are needed to produce a good swing, he or she will be able to produce great hits on a regular basis.
But yet, most golfers seem to think that swing experimentation is the only way to improve their swing. It is not. Also note that the physical improvement is not just in general overall fitness but in specialized fitness that is specific to the actions executed by the golfer. In other words, the strength exercises duplicate the specific joint actions seen in the golf swing. The exercises dynamically correspond to the technique.
