It appears that we have become so inundated with hype and bs that we no longer look for or expect objective reporting or investigating. It seems that when new coaches are hired, their virtues are extolled to the point of nausea.
For example, the recent hiring of an assistant football coach for a Division I team that has had a losing record for many years, brought many gushing comments. A headline even stated that he offers hope that the team can recapture past glory.
In the article, several players from the high school at which he had coached were interviewed. The comments were that the athlete “learned a lot of stuff”; the coach “wanted tradition”. “Brotherhood” was another “huge thing that he wants on a team”.
Another player stated that “He taught us about life. He was definitely a role model”. According to the writer, the new assistant coach was a good reason “to restore faith in one of the nation’s sad-sack programs … and… to support big-time college football in our community”.
But aren’t all coaches supposed to do this? Isn’t it the responsibility of coaches to teach a lot of things so that athletes can”learn a lot of stuff”? Aren’t all coaches supposed to be role models and aren’t they all interested in tradition and brotherhood etc.? What is he bringing in that is different and more effective?
I have no problem hearing hype and bs comments such as these if they are balanced by some objective comments regarding his abilities as a coach in developing better players. What will he be doing to help the players execute their skills were effectively? What new ideas will he bring to the table to improve their performance on the field? The comments should be about specific things that he will be doing.
Without any objectivity in regard to changes and enhancements in the training of the players, we can expect more of the same as we experienced from past coaches. It is easy to say the coach will do wonders, but if they can’t spell out what these changes are or will be then we can rest assured it’s all hype and BS.
