The Soviet System of Training

In the last few years, there has been increased interest in the Soviet system of training. Coaches are finding out that the Russians had many unique methods of training that helped them develop great Olympic performers and world record holders. We now there realize it was not because of drug use.

The success of the Soviet system was due mainly to advanced scientific methods, many of which are now becoming popular in the U.S. and other countries. For example, practices such as plyometrics, periodization, specificity of exercises, the shock method, sports restoration, and specialized strength exercises, are increasing in popularity.

Information on the Soviet system of training was first reported in the Soviet Sports Review, later known as the Fitness and Sports Review International, These journals contained translated articles dealing with the theory and practice of the Soviet system of training. The number of coaches and athletes reading these journals has increased greatly over the last few years.

The first book to appear on the Soviet system of training was the Secrets of Soviet Sports Fitness and Training. This book changed dramatically the way coaches constructed their workout programs and conduct their workouts. They achieved greater success in comparison to the programs that they had been using.

For example, the concept of speed-strength training, which was a major feature of the Soviet system, is the basis for most of speed and explosive training programs presently in existence. The incorporation of plyometrics has made appreciable differences in these and other programs when training for greater speed and explosive power.

Also, quite innovative, was the use of restorative measures to help athletes recover faster from heavy and intense workouts. These have yet to find their way into mainstream U.S. practice. Once they do, we will begin seeing many more impressive improvements in the training of athletes. The role of these methods is especially valuable in contact sports and in heavy or stressful type sports.

The Secrets of Russian Sports Fitness and Training is an excellent source for examining the total concept of training an athlete and the many different factors that are involved. Reading this book and implementing some of the ideas contained, can enhance your training and training program greatly.
