According to Michael Yessis, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, California State University at Fullerton, as reported in the FITNESS & SPORTS REVIEW INTERNATIONAL, walking, especially power walking, is becoming very popular among bodybuilders and fitness buffs. People who are involved in power walking, in which you walk with good form as fast as possible, are finding that it is not only easier on the joints but that it produces great aerobic benefits. If you take walks through the forest or a nice neighborhood, the walk can also be mentally rewarding.
Walking is effective for burning fat and for overall improvement of health. As with other aerobic activities, the faster you execute the walking (as in power walking) and the longer you can go, the greater are the benefits. This is especially important for bodybuilders who use aerobic activities to burn fat. The high intensity of muscle involvement when doing fast walking helps to maintain and, in some cases, improve muscle tone.
